There was a time when Sundays afternoons filled me with dread.
Rather than unwinding and taking the time to relax, my mind would be in overdrive. I frequently felt breathless and anxious as I thought about work, family obligations, meal plans and you know - everything! I often found myself hurriedly washing uniforms at the last minute, searching for misplaced library books, shoes, and socks, attempting to plan meals, and mentally gearing up for another hectic week.
Sound familiar?
The reality is that beginning the week in a calm and orderly manner is entirely achievable and is something you deserve. Our families don't come with a manual. Unless you've had intentional parents who modelled great rituals and routines, it's common to believe that chaos and overwhelm is normal.
That's where the Sunday Reset came in - a few intentional rituals that turned my Sundays from an anxious flustered mess to more flow and calm. We have a lot more control over our weeks than we realise.
You can listen to my Sunday Reset podcast episode here, where I explore these ideas in more detail, but here are the four things I do on a Sunday that changed everything.
Environment Reset
Before attempting to start the new week, take a moment to bring your Spring clean or a Marie Kondo transformation, but simply returning stray items to their proper place, disposing of them in the recycle bin, or adding them to the thrift shop bag.
Clothes and shoes get put away in drawers and coats are returned to hooks. Toys are returned to their home and books go back on shelves. Dirty washing goes in the washing basket. Entry ways, kitchen counters and laundry benches are clean and clear.
And this is not a solo job. I highly recommend setting a ten minute timer where everyone in the family chooses (or is assigned!) a job and works as a team to reset the home environment together.
Music helps motivate and a visual timer is wonderful for younger children.
Remember... it's not deep cleaning, it's clearing visual noise so everyone wakes up Monday to a fresh start.
Glance at the Week Ahead
I call this my Cursory Glance. I open my planner and phone and skim through the week: work commitments, sports days, kids extracurricular appointments, birthdays.
Then I transfer what matters most to my weekly planner — the essentials that keep the family running smoothly.
No overwhelm. Just clarity.
And I want to add here that if there is no time for your self care we have a problem. You can't pour from an empty cup. Making time to physically and mentally fit is an absolute priority.
You can get a stack of weekly planners for a few dollars at Kmart or Target. Share and display your weekly plan somewhere visible so everyone has clarity about what is happening this week.
Planning Meals
Forget the full-on, Pinterest-level meal prep.
Just jot down 5 easy dinners and make sure you’ve got the basics for breakfasts and lunches.
This avoids the “what’s for dinner?” stress every night.
Use your dinner plan to order what you need online. For many, this means using Woolworths or Coles Click and Collect services. Lite and Easy, ready made or Hellofresh are other great alternatives. You'll likely save money and inches on the waistline by avoiding the temptation of end-of-aisle specials. This is a massive time saver.
Get All the Children's Things Ready
Library books, sports gear, uniforms, shoes, socks, hats, music books — all the little things that cause big chaos Monday morning.
We get them sorted Sunday afternoon so there’s no last-minute scramble.
It takes five minutes, but it makes the whole week feel lighter. This is a non-negotiable for me - no one goes to bed without this step being implemented.
Once your children are school age I strongly encourage you to empower them to do this task. A visual list can be helpful. You be amazed at how many children I have taught at school have no idea how to care for their belongings.
Why It Works
The Sunday Reset isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right few things that create flow, not frenzy.
Because when you start the week with peace, your whole family feels it — and that energy carries into every morning, every meal, every moment.
